HSBC collaborates with universities and research institutes to participate in academic research and drive innovation.

Examples of this collaboration include:

  • HSBC has partnered with the Department of Physics and School of Data Science at Fudan University to collaborate on research in emerging technologies such as data, machine learning, and quantum computing to promote innovation in financial technology research.
  • HSBC has signed a partnership agreement with the School of Computer Science and Technology at Fudan University to jointly research and develop an intelligent software development algorithm based on large language models, aiming to digitize software engineering at HSBC and enhance development efficiency, code quality, and customer experience. The collaboration will focus on researching and developing innovative algorithms, tools, and methods to achieve more intelligent, efficient, and maintainable software development processes.
  • In 2021, HSBC entered a strategic partnership with The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to enhance technology applications in banking and finance, and to develop and deliver tailor-made talent development programmes. Areas of research include Generative AI, Large Language Models, Quantum Computing, Fraud Detection & Prevention, Digital Humans/Deep Fakes, and Actuarial Science.
  • HSBC is part of a consortium supporting the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) with Phase 1 of Project MindForge, a Veritas Initiative based on FEAT principles which focuses on examining the risks and opportunities of Gen AI technology in financial services.   • HSBC has joined the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s (MAS) Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) consortium. The focus is on facilitating collaborations between financial institutions, educational institutions and training providers, technology firms and other stakeholders to develop talent as part of a talent development programme in the field of AIDA for the financial sector.
  • HSBC has supported pilot initiatives with the UK’s Centre for Finance, Innovation and Technology (CFIT) designed to make access to finance quicker and easier for SME’s. More information can be found here.
  • HSBC Mexico is working with Endeavor Mexico to collaborate on accelerating transformation and empowering open innovation. The focus is on how to stay ahead of the increasingly dynamic and challenging market where gen AI is playing a pivotal role on the accelerated growth seen from market participants, and the changing of the market landscape.
  • HSBC is a member of MIT ILP (Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Industrial Liaison Program), which is a program for large organizations interested in long-term, strategic relationships with MIT. Executives can learn about breakthrough discoveries so that they can make better decisions, develop new capabilities, platforms, and business models, and develop their next generation of professionals and executive leadership. MIT ILP offers learning, coursework, conferences, access to startup companies, and special sessions to engage with professors.
